Lithium battery fires are a growing concern in micromobility. We partnered with Voi Technology to test the MAUS Stixx PRO fire suppression system on high-output 36V lithium batteries. Two scenarios were simulated: severe battery failure and a charging malfunction. In the charging test, the system activated automatically, extinguished the fire, and kept the cabinet temperature below 60°C.

As e-scooter and e-bike use rises, so does the need for reliable fire safety. This test, supported by Voi, demonstrates the MAUS Stixx PRO’s ability to handle larger battery systems. It does not reflect on Voi’s product safety but supports their commitment to industry safety improvements.

Insurance company collaboration

Our partner, insurance company Länsförsäkringar Bergslagen, is developing a lithium battery charging cabinet with MAUS and Optimel AB. We recently tested our fire suppression system integrated into the cabinet to meet the growing need for safe charging solutions as lithium battery use increases in agriculture and industry.

The test took place at Stockholm Training Port, simulating real fire scenarios. This collaboration helps refine our technology to improve fire safety in workplaces and farms.

The question we wanted to have an answer for was Will the MAUS technology extinguish a lithium battery fire?”. In theory we knew it was possible due to it’s unique features as the potassium based aerosol absors the heat. But, we wanted to witness it in real life.

Self Extinguishing Battery Patent

On the 31st of January 2024 we patented our solution on how to stop the problems with
lithium fires in batteries. The production of electric vehicles increases every year, but not yet has there been a solution on how to suppress the fire before it becomes a fire hazard. Not until now.
MAUS has filed a patent of an invention where the device becomes a self-extinguishing battery that distributes the extinguishing gas evenly between the battery cells.

Think of the caps as two halves that enclose the battery pack and where the halves contain extinguishing equipment and electrical connection between the battery cells. The halves seal against each other and there is a separation between the cells so that the entire battery cell is accessible with the extinguishing agent if it should become necessary.
